Ghalina privacy policy
Last updated: 5 October 2026
Ghalina turns a parent’s Android phone into a simple phone with big buttons, SOS, fall alerts and medicine reminders, and lets the family help from their own phones. This policy explains, in plain words, what the app collects, why, who can see it, and how to delete it. Questions: privacy@ghalina.com.
1. Two kinds of phones
- The parent’s phone (“senior mode”) has no login. It uses an anonymous technical account that is only used to connect it to its family.
- Family phones (“family mode”): every family member signs in with Google, so they keep access when they change phones.
2. What the parent’s phone shares with the family
Only after the parent agrees during setup (“What your family will see”). While it shares, a notification on the parent’s phone always says so: “Ghalina is looking after this phone”.
- Phone status, about every 15 minutes and when something changes: battery level and charging, sound on or off and ring volume, Wi-Fi, mobile data and airplane mode, whether Ghalina is the home screen and the phone app, which permissions are allowed, whether fall detection runs, app and Android version, phone model, time zone, when the phone was last online, and whether it is inside the safe zone (yes or no – not where it is).
- Location, only in these cases: (1) at once when SOS is pressed or after a fall, inside that alert; (2) when the phone leaves the safe zone, inside that alert – also when the app is closed or not in use; and (3) once, when a family member sets up the safe zone (“Use … current location as home”): the phone then shares a single location, which is deleted from our servers after 24 hours. The status updates never contain the location, and the family cannot follow where the phone goes. On the phone itself the location is also used for the prayer times of medicine reminders; that stays on the phone.
- Alerts: SOS, possible falls, leaving the safe zone, low battery, phone silenced, phone offline, missed medicines and medicines running low – with the time, the battery level and, for SOS, falls and the safe zone, the location.
- Medicines (health information): names, doses, times, pill photos, and whether each dose was taken, skipped or missed.
- Installed apps: the names of the apps on the parent’s phone, so the family can arrange the home screen.
- The parent’s name and photo, the home screen layout and the phone’s Ghalina settings.
3. What the family adds to the parent’s phone
- Contacts for the home screen: names, phone numbers and photos.
- Photos to show on the parent’s phone.
- Voice reminders recorded by a family member for a medicine.
- Medicine schedules, the safe zone (a place and a radius) and settings.
4. What we collect about family members
- From Google sign-in: your name, e-mail address and profile photo.
- What you enter: your name, phone number and photo (shown to your family and, if you choose, as a contact on your parent’s phone).
- Your role in each family (admin or member) and your alert choices.
- A notification token for each phone you use and the app language, so alerts reach you in your language.
- For the Family Pass: the order number, date and which parents it covers. Payments are made through Google Play; we never see card details.
5. What stays on the phone
Calls and the call history, the parent’s own address book (used on the phone to show who is calling), voice commands, the magnifier’s camera picture and the settings PIN stay on the phone and are not sent to us. Voice commands are turned into text by the phone’s speech service.
6. Why we use the data
Only to provide Ghalina: alerts and SOS, the phone status, the safe zone, medicine reminders and history, contacts and photos, setting up the parent’s phone remotely, moving to a new phone, and the Family Pass. There are no ads. We do not sell data, share it with data brokers or use it for profiling.
7. Who can see it
- The family members connected to that parent (up to 6) and the parent’s phone itself. Nobody else in Ghalina can see a family’s data.
- Our service providers process data for us: Google Firebase (sign-in, database, file storage, server functions, notifications, app integrity checks) and Google Play (purchases). They act on our instructions.
- We disclose data only if the law requires it.
8. Where it is stored and how it is protected
The database and files are stored on Google Cloud in the European Union (Belgium, region europe-west1). Some Google services we use, such as sign-in and notifications, may process data in other countries under Google’s safeguards. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Security rules let only the members of a family read its data; pairing, invite and new-phone codes are single-use and expire.
9. How long we keep it
- As long as the family uses Ghalina for that parent, until it is deleted (see below).
- Pairing and new-phone codes expire after 30 minutes and invites after 7 days; they are then removed.
- A location shared once for the safe-zone setup is deleted after 24 hours.
- When an account or a parent’s data is deleted, it is removed from our database and file storage at once. Copies in Google Cloud’s backup systems are erased on Google’s schedule.
- The record of a Family Pass purchase is kept so the pass keeps working for the rest of the family and for accounting. Google Play keeps its own purchase records.
10. Your choices
- The parent can stop sharing at any time: Ghalina settings → “Leave senior mode” (the family may have protected the settings with a PIN), or uninstall Ghalina.
- Family members can edit their profile, sign out, or delete their account in the app: Settings → Account → “Delete my account”.
- The family admin can delete all of a parent’s data: the parent’s page → “Delete all of … data”.
- Without the app: see Delete your account or data.
- Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your data, to object to its use, and to complain to a data protection authority. Write to privacy@ghalina.com.
11. Children
Ghalina is not for children. Family accounts are for adults (18 or older); the parent’s phone is meant for older adults.
12. Changes
When this policy changes, we update the date above. For important changes we also tell you in the app.
